Warm-up ride: Sunday 09/08/13 - 19 miles

The first half of our travels will be on the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) bike trail which will take us from Pittsburgh, PA to Cumberland, MD.  Homestead (referenced below) is just 7.5 miles SE of Pittsburgh.

The second half of our bicycling adventure will be on the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath (C&O) bike trail, which runs 185 miles along the Potomac River from Cumberland, MD to Washington, D.C.  The Potomac has been nicknamed "the Nation's River" since it is situated in an area rich in American history and heritage.

Today we did a casual round trip bicycle ride from our motel in Homestead, PA up to the Point State Park in Pittsburgh and back.
This water fountain designates the very beginning (or end, if biking SE to NW) of the GAP and is a very symbolic spot in Pittsburgh.

On the Hot Metal Bridge with Pittsburgh in the background.  The bridge is for bicyclists as well as pedestrians.

Our motel in Homestead is right on the Monongahela River.
